Port of Halifax Receives $12.5 Million in Federal Funding For Advanced Security Network

Halifax, NS November 16, 2006 - The Port of Halifax today received approval to spend $12.5 million in funding from the Government of Canada to implement an advanced, port-wide security network. The funding will allow for full integration of 14 private and public facilities around Halifax Harbour.
The funding is part of Round 3 of the federal government's Marine Security Contribution Program which supports security projects through applications by Canadian ports.

"As a North American gateway we are entrusted with ships from around the world. We need to employ a security network that uses the latest technology and is world-class," says George Malec, Vice President of Operations and Security, Halifax Port Authority. "This funding will allow us to raise the bar on port security, building on the work of many private and public partners in our Port."
Over the next year, the Port of Halifax will invest in hardware, software and equipment to integrate land and water security using the latest security technology. The Port will also implement additional training, audits, on-going threat risk analysis and emergency response coordination as part of the port-wide security plan.
