Port of Halifax announces Berth Deepening Project at Halterm
November 03, 2006
Halifax, NS November 03, 2006 - The Halifax Port Authority is pleased to announce it will deepen the Pier C berths of its Southend Container Terminal facility, operated by Halterm Limited, from a current depth of 15 meters to a new depth of 16 meters. This dredging will allow safer clearance for the keels of fully-laden, post-Panamax vessels with a capacity of 8,000 TEU's or more.
"Shipping lines are looking to the Port of Halifax because of our available capacity and this further investment in our infrastructure will allow us to handle their business," said George Malec, Vice President, Operations and Security, Halifax Port Authority.
The dredging work is scheduled to begin in mid-November 2006 and will be completed within three months. The estimated cost to the Halifax Port Authority for this dredging work is $1.5 million. The contract has been awarded to Harbour Development Inc.
Halifax harbour is the deepest natural harbour on the east coast of North America and the berth dredging work of the Halifax Port Authority ensures that both of its container handling facilities are properly prepared to accommodate larger post-panamax vessels.
"We are absolutely delighted that the Halifax Port Authority is going to deepen our berths at Pier C to 16 meters. Our business has grown substantially over the past year with the addition of new all water Suez services from Maersk and China Shipping, and with the recent addition of two North Atlantic carriers, Europe West Indies Lines and Eimskip Americas. And now with the Port Authority's commitment to deepen our berths, we're even better equipped to handle the future demands of new and existing customers", said Doug Rose, President and CEO of Halterm Limited.
