Maersk Line MECL 2 calls on Port of Halifax

Halifax, Nova Scotia (May 1, 2006) - The Port of Halifax celebrates the arrival of Maersk's new Middle East Container Line service MECL 2 to the east coast of North America , via the Suez Canal. The Maersk Duisburg, one of eight vessels making up this weekly service, made its inaugural call to Halifax this morning.
Halterm Limited will provide container handling services in the Port of Halifax. Halterm President Doug Rose estimates that this new service will increase container volumes by 30-35% at Halterm.
Maersk is the world's largest container shipping line, with more than 500 container vessels and 1,400,000 containers.
"This commitment to the Port of Halifax will give both the Port and Halterm a significant boost." said, Karen Oldfield, President and Chief Executive Officer, Halifax Port Authority.
"Halifax is an ideal Port for our MECL 2 service with its strategic location and one of the deepest container berths on the eastern seaboard of North America it can accommodate our larger ships" said, David Cardin, President, of Maersk Canada.
The Port Rotation for the MECL 2 service will be:
