500,000th TEU of the year moved through the Port of Halifax
November 28, 2005
The 500,000th TEU of the year moved through the Port of Halifax on November 28, 2005. This marks the 6th consecutive year that the Port has handled over one-half million twenty foot equivalent units. The 500,000 TEU moved through the Port on Atlantic Container Line's (ACL) vessel the Atlantic Companion.
Atlantic Container Line is one of the longest calling customers to the Port of Halifax, dating back to 1968. Currently calling at Fairview Cove Container Terminal, they were the second largest customer in 2004 in terms of TEUs.
"Atlantic Container Line provides a valuable service over Halifax for container, ro/ro and project cargo," says Karen Oldfield, President & CEO, Halifax Port Authority. "ACL also ships a significant volume of US Midwest cargo over Halifax, with over 50% of the market share."
The Atlantic Companion is destined for Liverpool, England, where it will be unloading imports from Canada and the Eastern United States. The Atlantic Companion is part of ACL's North Atlantic "A" Service, which includes five 3,100 TEU vessels all with ro/ro (roll on / roll off) capability.
