Transport Minister Announces Appointment to Halifax Port Authority

November 3, 2005

OTTAWA - Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today announced the appointment of Mr. Mark MacDonald Q.C of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to the board of directors of the Halifax Port Authority.

"I am pleased that Mr. MacDonald has agreed to serve as a member of the board," said Mr. Lapierre. "His extensive legal experience and knowledge of the marine industry will serve him well."

Mr. MacDonald received his bachelor of laws from Dalhousie University. He is the president and chief executive officer of Bay Ferries Ltd. and Northumberland Ferries Ltd. He was a partner in the law firm of Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1998. Mr. MacDonald has worked on a number of east coast projects including the Sable Offshore Energy Project, the Confederation Bridge, the Hibernia Project and Nova Scotia's Cobequid Pass.

The Halifax Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority established under the Canada Marine Act on March 1, 1999, to manage the Port of Halifax. As a Canada Port Authority, the Halifax Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders.

The Port of Halifax handled 13.8 million tonnes of cargo in 2004, with nearly 2,000 cargo vessels using its facilities. It also serves as a cruise port with a reputation for the safe and efficient handling of some of the world's largest and most luxurious ships at its principal cruise facility, Ocean Terminals. Last year, 122 cruise ships and almost 212,000 passengers called in to the port.
