Hapag-Lloyd Named Port of Halifax Top Volume Container Carrier for 2004
February 18, 2005
Halifax - International shipping line Hapag-Lloyd Container Line has been named 2004's Top Volume Container Carrier through the Port of Halifax. Karen Oldfield, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority, presented an award to Holger Oetjen, Managing Director of Hapag-Lloyd, Wednesday in Montreal.
"Hapag-Lloyd is a long-standing customer of the Port of Halifax and a strong competitor in the global shipping business," said Karen Oldfield. "They have been a major contributor to the Port of Halifax and we commend them for their success in 2004."
For over 150 years, Hapag-Lloyd has been one of the world's leading suppliers of cargo transportation. They first began calling the Port of Halifax in 1969 and have since become a key player in the Port's business. Currently, the company calls Halifax on three service routes serving Europe and the Far East with an inbound and outbound call of each service every week:
- AEX/PNX - service from Asia to North America via the Suez Canal
- PAX - service from Asia to North America and Europe via the Panama Canal
- North Atlantic A Service - service from Europe to North America
"For years Hapag-Lloyd has successfully used Halifax as a major North American gateway. With huge congestion challenges in many North American ports, I see significant new opportunities for Hapag-Lloyd developing in Halifax in the future," said Holger Oetjen. "It is important for all participating stakeholders to work together to convert these opportunities into successes."
2004 was the second largest year for containerized cargo operations in the Port of Halifax with a total of 525,553 TEUs passing through the Port.
