Gateway to the Halifax Harbourwalk Opening at the Port
September 24, 2004
September 24, 2004 - The Halifax Port Authority will reveal a new "Gateway" to the Halifax Harbourwalk on Saturday, September 25. This new public space will be unveiled at an event scheduled to coincide with the arrival of the Queen Mary 2 to the Port of Halifax.
The park area will be officially opened by Halifax Port Authority Board chairman, Alan Abraham, Jr., and DRUM, a performance group featuring singers, dancers, musicians and entertainers, at a ceremony on Saturday morning.
"We have heard from the community that the Halifax Harbourwalk should be better connected through to Piers 20-23. We thought that this Gateway would be the perfect way to start. We were inspired to turn a parking lot into a new public area where local people and tourists can gather and enjoy the waterfront," says Karen Oldfield, President and CEO, Halifax Port Authority.
This space will become a venue for special events and a vantage point to view harbour activity. "People love to come to the waterfront and this new area will be a great vantage point to watch cargo and cruise ships go by," says Oldfield.
The park area will also become a venue to showcase the sculptures of Nova Scotian artists. "We wanted to create a special place where local art and creativity can be celebrated. We are building on the artistic theme that is present in this part of the waterfront and expect to build on this concept over time," says Oldfield.
The Halifax Port Authority is working with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia to display the talent of local artists throughout the year at the Gateway. The first two sculptures featured are works by Dennis Gill and Alexander Graham, two Nova Scotian artists.
The Halifax Port Authority is a government business enterprise mandated by the Federal Ministry of Transport.
