September 3, 2002

Halifax, NS - The Halifax Port Authority, Export Development Canada, and the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters Nova Scotia Division are pleased to host a workshop examining the advantages of Atlantic Canadian based companies doing business in the Dominican Republic.

Jeff Rannik, Chartering Manager, B&R Group, is the guest speaker at the workshop. He will discuss the growth of free trade manufacturing zones and the development of the Caucedo Project, a deepwater container terminal on the south coast of the Dominican Republic. The B&R Group is the flagship company of the largest and most diversified marine services group in the Dominican Republic.

"Discussions will focus on the advantages of shipping containerized exports to the Dominican Republic through the Port of Halifax," said Patrick Bohan, Manager, Business Development, Halifax Port Authority. "There are currently ships that call both Halifax and the Dominican Republic and we would like to increase the numbers in the future."

In 2001, Canada exported over $6 million of goods such as seafood products, paper mill products, steel and apparel to the Dominican Republic. The country is said to have the world's fastest growing economy.
