Halifax, NS - The Port of Halifax cargo results for 2001 indicate a strong performance for the year. Total cargo surpassed 14 million tonnes, up form 13.94 million tonnes in 2000.

"Considering the general economic climate prevailing in 2001, particularly in the second half," said Karen Oldfield, Halifax Port Authority's recently appointed President & CEO, "we consider 2001 to be an excellent year for the Port."

Bulk cargo accounted for 9.2 million tonnes for the year. Container cargo totalled 4.41 million tonnes equating to 542,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The Halifax Port Authority's (HPA) preliminary financial results also reflect a strong showing. For 2001, the HPA earned a net income of $5.7 million on revenues of $18.3 million. Capital expenditures for the year were $9.2 million.
