Port of Halifax and Odessa Sign Memorandum to Promote Trade

Ottawa, June 4, 2009 – The Port of Halifax, Canada and Odessa, Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Cooperation today aimed at identifying and generating new business opportunities for both ports.

Representatives of the Port of Halifax attended a ceremony at the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada today, hosted by Ukrainian Ambassador Ihor Ostash, along with representatives from the Canadian Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Canadian MPs.

The Memorandum recognizes the current two-way trade between the Ports of Halifax and Odessa and promotes an expansion of opportunities for importers and exporters in both countries to utilize Halifax as a gateway port for Canada and North America, and the Port of Odessa as a gateway port for Ukraine and Eastern Europe via the Black Sea.

Major commodities that currently move between the two ports include seafood and meat, wood products, railcars and finished goods.

The Port of Halifax currently has cooperation agreements with the Port of Chennai (India), the Suez Canal Authority, and the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp.
