Halifax Port Authority supports Norfolk Twin Cities Project

Halifax, NS and Norfolk, Virginia became sister cities in 2006. The Halifax Port Authority has been involved in the Halifax-Norfolk Sister Cities Citizens Committee to support the sister city relationship and helped to sponsor, “Peggy – The Sea Sister.”

Peggy, the Norfolk Halifax Lobster

Peggy, a seven-foot lobster, was recently created for Norfolk and was shipped in April in time for their Azalea Festival.

In exchange, Halifax will receive Norfolk’s popular mermaid sculpture for permanent display.

Participation by the HPA's 65 employees increased to 67%, with the winning employee team reaching a 79% participation rate.

Gateway Park

Input from the local community inspired us to transform a parking lot into a new public area where local people and tourists can enjoy the waterfront. On September 25, 2004, we officially revealed a new "Gateway" to the Halifax Harbourwalk, providing a better connection through to Piers 20-23. Keeping in line with the vision for our waterfront, the space will become a venue for special events and a vantage point to view harbour activity.

To maintain the artistic theme that is present in this part of the waterfront, this area is also a venue to showcase the sculptures of Nova Scotian artists. We are working with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia to display the talent of local artists throughout the year at the Gateway. It all goes back to supporting our local community and making our waterfront an accessible and enjoyable place to visit.

New Play Structure Unveiled at Bedford Waterfront

September 16, 2004

DeWolfe Park on the Bedford waterfront is home to a new activity area for children

The Halifax Port Authority and Waterfront Development Corporation Limited, in association with Halifax Regional Municipality, officially opened the HAIDA, a new play structure, at DeWolfe Park on September 16, 2004.

"Public spaces keep our local communities vibrant," said Alan Abraham, Jr., Chairman of the Halifax Port Authority Board of Directors. "The Halifax Port Authority applauds the effort to enhance DeWolfe Park and create a structure with a nod to our naval heritage."

The play boat is loosely based on the HMCS HAIDA, a Tribal class destroyer of British design. Originating in the late 1930s, the vessel was captained by Commander Harry George DeWolfe, for whom the park is named.

Blue Nose International Marathon

For the second year in a row, our employees tightly tied the laces of their running shoes and went to great lengths to support their local community. Employees participated in the 2nd Annual Blue Nose International Marathon, hosted by the Halifax Regional Municipality. Our relay team, "Dangerous Goods," has raised over $1200 to help support YMCA's Strong Kids Program. We are proud to support our community and encourage a healthy lifestyle at the same time.
