Environmental Initiatives & Accomplishments

Ship to Shore Program

We partnered with Clean Nova Scotia this past summer to encourage boaters in Halifax Harbour to develop good environmental practices when operating their vessels. Clean Nova Scotia created a program called The Ship to Shore program to educate recreational boaters about clean boating practices. Through this program, 524 brochures and 398 bilge socks were distributed to boaters in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Association of Canadian Port Authorities

The Halifax Port Authority is currently chair of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities environment committee. For more information please visit the Association of Canadian Port Authorities web site:

South End Container Terminal Lighting Project

Recently, at the South End Container Terminal up-grades were made to the lighting infrastructure. The 20 year old system was replaced with a newer more efficient lighting system, effectively doubling the light on the terminal. This up-grade will reduce the terminal’s electricity bill by at least 30 per cent while limiting light pollution by only illuminating working areas. These new lights will save about 500 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year.

Cruise Initiatives

We have developed standard practices and procedures for cruise ships. The cruise lines are supportive of these initiatives and many of the lines have extensive standards and systems as well.

Recycling

We have introduced a recycling program on all of our properties to separate various waste. Through the use of technology we have been able to reduce our paper consumption at the HPA.

Oil-Water Separators

We have installed oil-water separators in the stormwater drains at various places on our property so that any oil or grease that may be pick up off the piers by rainwater is removed from the water.

Waste Water

The HPA is in the final stages of a multi-year construction program which will divert all of the sewage generated on port property into the new municipal sewage treatment facilities.
